Will the AI boom hamper net zero targets?

According to the International Energy Agency, data centres currently account for almost 2 percent of global electricity use, with the world’s still-exploding boom in artificial intelligence set to drive that number up substantially. Projections suggest that energy demand for this processing power could double by 2026, which is roughly equal to the amount of electricity used by the country of Japan.

Data centres need reliable 24/7/365 power generation, which is not currently possible with solar and wind power alone. An energy mix that includes existing coal and gas fired generation plants is our current reality.

As the world looks for solutions to meet its accelerating energy needs with reduced carbon emissions, we offer a solution to help existing generators toward net zero.

Hydrobe® was founded on the desire to tackle ‘the carbon problem’ head-on by creating a technology that recycles carbon at the source. Our patented process harnesses microbiology to voraciously consume CO₂ emissions from facilities such as power plants.

Hydrobe’s unique process uses a method of algae production that has broken published records for algae growth and carbon fixation in laboratory tests at Curtin University in Perth, Australia. Hydrobe® recently commissioned a 3,000 litre demonstration Photobioreactor in Melbourne, Australia, to verify this technology at scale. There is more to do, but this milestone is a critical step toward viable industrial solutions for decarbonization in a world facing increasing energy demand.
